To check on what the Dow Jones did overnight (http://www.marketwatch.com/quotes/djia) I use this site... http://www.marketwatch.com/quotes/djia
To check on a particular stock in the US you can just put the stock name into the search box on that page (top right corner) or adjust the link. For example for BHP in America (http://www.marketwatch.com/Quotes/bhp) you could click here... http://www.marketwatch.com/Quotes/bhp
In the (our) evening, if you want to see what the Dow Futures (http://www.cnbc.com:80/id/17689937/site/14081545/) are doing (which will help you see what the underlying sentiment is for the US market open) click here... http://www.cnbc.com:80/id/17689937/site/14081545/
This last site is also useful to click on before the end of our (Australian) trading day to see what the futures are doing which will help you decide if you should hold a position overnight. For example, let's say you want to know if you should hold a position overnight and it's 3:30pm (half an hour before our market closes). A quick check will tell you what the Dow Futures (http://www.cnbc.com:80/id/17689937/site/14081545/) are doing and could give an indication of what the US market will open at. Of course that's no guarantee that the market will stay high or low but it's a guide as to the sentiment.
Hope this helps.
